Over the weekend, Twitch streamer Boba streamed herself playing Solid Metal Gear for the very first time, and after being attacked by guards, she turned to fight them. At that point, she accidentally ended up being pushed back through a locked door, discovering a new glitch that could save a lot of time and has MGS speedrunners going wild with the possibilities of saving time.

In Solid Metal Gear , you eventually reach a section where you have to climb and descend comm towers, fight a helicopter, climb a bunch of stairs, and even rappel down a rope. It’s a lot. During this section, Boba was running from the guards and reached a locked door, so she turned to fight off the swarm of angry armed thugs. While doing so, she was shot several times, being knocked back enough for Snake’s model to pass through the door and seemingly activate a trigger, letting Boba jump the stairs and enter the outside area early. She celebrated with a song.

In a video interview, Boba explained that she didn’t think much about it at the time. « I thought it was something someone had probably done before, by accident. »

However, it was a great moment. No one had ever seen or documented this bug before and it seemed to leave Boba skipping a good chunk of gameplay. Quickly, as images of the bug spread across Twitter and Reddit, the collective Solid Metal Gear speedrunning community lost their shit . Some felt that if this issue could be reliably reproduced, it could save up to two or three minutes . And, within hours , people had started reproducing the bug, which some call the « Boba Skip, » although Boba herself wishes it was called « Kevin. »

Now, after reproducing the bug, players have started to form a theory and study how this bug works, what it means for the game, and if it is viable elsewhere. Players on the MGS Discord server speedrunning are testing other locked doors and inaccessible areas of the game where this « Boba/Kevin Skip » could be used to gain even more time. If some of these areas become skippable using this glitch, it’s possible that Boba has not only come up with a neat trick that saves a few minutes, but a whole new strategy that could completely change the way people race. Solid metal gear on PC and console.

Not bad for someone who doesn’t obsessively speedrun the game every day and in fact has never played Solid Metal Gear before. According to Boba, a speedrunner said she liked that she found the bug because instead of a longtime speedrunner, she was someone who was just having fun with MGS .

« The best part is, he’s not some nerd who’s been speedrunning Metal Gear for like a hundred years, » the speedrunner told him. « It’s just that I’m having fun playing a video game and I accidentally discover this crazy thing. »
